What is a Heatmaster Furnace?

A Heatmasterss Outdoor Wood Furnace is a safe and efficient way to heat your home with wood. It can be installed outside, away from the home or building being heated. A water jacket surrounds the furnace firebox and the heat is transferred from the wood fire to the water. The heated water is pumped underground to the home or building through insulated underground pipes. Water-to-air or water-to-water heat exchanger or direct circulation conveys the heat into the structures forced-air furnace, boiler or radiant floor heating system, and to the water heater to provide domestic hot water.

Wood Burning and the Environment

A wood heating system is the right choice for the increasing number of consumers who are concerned about our environment. Wood is a totally renewable resource, which, when burned, results in no net carbon dioxide increase. Carbon dioxide is a part of the natural plant-growth cycle and occurs naturally when trees are allowed to rot on the forest floor. On the other hand, fossil fuels, when burned, release carbon dioxide which otherwise would stay trapped in the earth. This causes a net increase in carbon dioxide, which is believed to be responsible for the heat-trapping “greenhouse effect.” So when heating with wood rather than fossil fuels, you actually achieve a net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, harvesting firewood has a pruning effect on forests, which allows net growth to flourish. The wood you burn likely comes from your local area – it’s not imported and not subject to price increases due to events outside your control (as well as what we have seen with the HST), as is the case with other fossil fuels.

Why is 409 Stainless Steel the best choice for Outdoor Furnaces?

We combine the best materials with expert engineering to create the most rugged, longest lasting furnaces available.

Titanium enhanced, corrosion resistant 409 Stainless Steel is the only product that can provide the right blend of longevity, cost-effectiveness and other critical traits that meet the Heatmasterss standard of excellence.

Advantages of 409 Stainless Steel

Heat Tolerance
409 Stainless Steel can withstand continuous temperatures of up to 1400º F while carbon steels used in outdoor furnaces cannot withstand anything over 800ºF. This means that when the fire is over 800ºF carbon steels begin to oxidize and break down causing material failure in the long term which means a shorter life span of your furnace.

Corrosion Resistance
Stainless Steel is stainless because it has chromium oxide film layered on the steel. This film keeps oxygen from penetrating and corroding the material (rusting). This is why you see mild (carbon) steel rusting while sitting out in the open. Mild steel will start slowly corroding away from the first day of it’s use. This is why many mild steel furnaces are at least 1/4” thick (to try to give the furnace more life span).

Heat Transfer
409 Stainless Steel has the best heat transfer capability of any steel used in outdoor furnaces, having about 60% more heat transfer capability than 304 stainless steel and a similar heat transfer capability to mild steel when factoring in the thickness of material necessary for mild steel furnaces.

Strength
Why are we able to use thinner material in our furnaces? Because 409 Stainless Steel was designed and developed for high temperature situations and to withstand corrosion.

Thermal Expansion/Warping
Again, 409 Stainless Steel outperforms all other stainless steels used in outdoor furnaces having a very low expansion rate and one that is similar to mild steel. This is why you will see furnaces made out of 304 Stainless Steel warp and spider crack often and be very hard to weld on. This is also why you can see our furnaces withstand a fire or burning low on water while other furnaces cannot.

409 SS Mild Steel
Corrosion Resistance Yes No
Heat Transfer Good Good
Thermal Expansion Low Low
Continuous Temperature Tolerance High Low
Cost Good Good

Can I heat my Domestic water with a Heatmasterss Furnace?

Yes, with the use of a domestic water heating kit. Can I connect a Heatmasterss furnace to a pressurized heating system? Yes, in one of two ways. By connecting it directly to the existing system and depressurizing it or by the use of a water-to-water heat exchanger the heat can be transferred from one system to the other.

Should I consider Radiant Heat?

Radiant heat installed under new or existing floors can be a great way to heat your home. Radiant floor heat is the most efficient way to transfer heat, however, it is important that you design the system correctly.

What can a Heatmasterss Boiler heat?

Heat where you need it. In addition to supplying domestic heat and hot water, an MFeSeries and G SERIES furnace can also provide heat for:
Baseboard heaters, hot tubs and pools, livestock structures such as dairy and hog barns, pressure washers, snow-melt for driveways, clothes dryers and almost any heating application you can imagine.
